Inspecting the Existing Lock and Preserving Vintage Hardware
Our technician inspected the mortise lock mechanism, glass doorknob, spindle, latch, and door alignment to assess what was affecting operation. The goal was to determine how the existing assembly could be serviced while protecting the surrounding woodwork and retaining the hardware the homeowner valued.
This traditional arrangement uses a lock body recessed into the edge of the door. The glass knob operates through a spindle, while the backplate surrounds the knob and the old-fashioned keyhole beneath it.
For this project, preserving the existing appearance was an important part of the assessment. Replacing the complete assembly with modern hardware would have changed the look the homeowner wanted to keep. We therefore focused on evaluating the original components and their fit before determining the appropriate repair.
