Susan, a resident of Canal Way in Hackettstown, NJ, called us after her key broke as she tried to unlock her black metal security gate during a heavy downpour. Part of the key remained inside the cylinder, leaving her outside in the rain with no way to open the gate.
Opening the Gate and Replacing the Damaged Lock
Our first priority was to open the gate so Susan could get inside. We released the deadbolt without damaging the metal gate or its frame, then removed the compromised lock hardware.
During the work, we found internal rust in the old mechanism. With the broken key lodged inside and the lock affected by corrosion, we replaced the deadbolt rather than leaving Susan with the damaged hardware.
We installed a new deadbolt suitable for outdoor use, aligned the locking bolt with the frame, lubricated the mechanism, and provided Susan with a fresh set of keys.
