Removing the Failed Cylinder and Restoring Lock Operation

We examined the door and found that the rim cylinder’s internal mechanism was damaged. We explained the issue to the customer and why the failed cylinder needed to be removed and replaced.

To regain access, we drilled the damaged cylinder and unlocked the door. Once inside, we removed the old cylinder and checked the tailpiece, mounting hardware, and remaining lock assembly.

The entrance has a dark painted door with raised rectangular panels, surrounded by white trim. A round brass-colored plate sits above the cylinder opening. During removal, the existing circular opening in the door was exposed.

The removed cylinder has a round, silver-colored face, with the drilled opening clearly visible at its center. This was the failed component we replaced; we retained the existing lock assembly after checking its operation.

We fitted a new rim cylinder, aligned its tailpiece with the locking mechanism, and secured the mounting hardware. The tailpiece connects the cylinder to the lock, allowing the turn of the key to operate the mechanism.

We then tested the new key and lock repeatedly to confirm smooth operation. The customer was back inside with a working lock, and the replacement was completed without changing the entire assembly.
