Panic Bar and Mortise Cylinder Replacement at a Clothing Store in Paramus

Panic Bar and Mortise Cylinder Replacement

We replaced the interior panic bar and exterior mortise cylinder and installed a pull handle at a clothing store on Route 4 in Paramus, NJ. The work involved both sides of the storefront door: the push-to-exit hardware inside the store and the keyed cylinder and handle outside.

Each component serves a different purpose. The panic bar operates the door from the interior, the mortise cylinder provides keyed operation from the exterior, and the pull handle gives customers and employees a place to grip when opening the door from outside.

For this project, our Door Lock Services covered the replacement of the two operating components together with the handle installation.

Panic Bar and Mortise Cylinder Replacement

Updating the Storefront Door Hardware

The interior photo shows a horizontal panic bar mounted across the storefront door. We replaced this assembly as part of the job. A panic bar allows someone inside the store to operate the exit hardware by pressing the bar rather than turning a knob or using a key.

On the exterior, we replaced the mortise cylinder—the round keyed component set into the door’s metal frame. A mortise cylinder is one part of the door’s locking arrangement; replacing it does not necessarily mean replacing every component of the lock.

We also installed the exterior pull handle. The outside photo shows the curved handle beside the cylinder on the dark storefront frame. Although the handle and cylinder sit close together, they do different jobs: the handle is used to pull the door, while the cylinder controls the keyed operation.

Why both sides of a retail door matter

A clothing store entrance is used throughout the day by shoppers, staff, and delivery personnel. Problems may become noticeable at different points: when an employee unlocks the store, when a customer pulls the handle, or when someone presses the panic bar to leave.

That is why a storefront hardware issue should be described as specifically as possible. “The door is hard to open” can refer to several different problems. A key that resists turning, a loose pull handle, and a panic bar that requires repeated pressure are separate symptoms, even when they occur on the same door.

The work at this Paramus store addressed the interior panic bar, the exterior mortise cylinder, and the pull handle in one visit.

What store employees should watch for

Pay attention to changes in how the entrance operates. If a handle begins moving at its mounting points, a key becomes difficult to turn, or the panic bar no longer responds consistently, arrange an inspection before the problem interrupts store access.

Avoid forcing a resistant key or repeatedly pulling harder on a loose handle. Extra force can damage a key or put additional strain on the hardware without resolving the cause.

When requesting service, explain whether the problem happens from inside, outside, or both. Photos of the panic bar, cylinder, handle, and door edge can also help a locksmith understand the arrangement before arriving. Keep the area around the entrance clear so the door and its hardware can be inspected.

Can you replace a panic bar without replacing the entire door?

In many cases, yes. The replacement depends on the door’s condition, existing mounting points, and compatibility with the new hardware. On this project, we replaced the panic bar on the existing storefront door.

Is a mortise cylinder the same as the complete lock?

No. The mortise cylinder is the keyed component that operates the connected locking mechanism. The condition of the remaining hardware determines whether cylinder replacement alone is appropriate.

Does the exterior pull handle operate the lock?

A fixed pull handle provides a grip for opening the door. It does not itself provide keyed locking. At this store, the exterior handle and mortise cylinder were separate components.

What should I report if the panic bar becomes difficult to press?

Describe whether the bar feels stiff, moves without releasing the door, or works intermittently. Also mention whether the door rubs against the frame or behaves differently when closing. Those observations help guide an inspection; they do not establish the cause on their own.

I got locked out of my house around 11 PM and searched for a local locksmith in River Edge. I called American Star Locksmith, and they were at my door within 20 minutes. The technician was very polite and explained exactly what he was going to do before starting. Within a minute, I was back inside. The price was very reasonable, especially for that hour of the night. I was extremely happy with the service and would definitely call them again. Highly recommend!

We recently moved into a new home in Teaneck and called American Star Locksmith to rekey all the locks and replace our main entry door. The locksmith explained everything clearly before getting started, worked neatly, and made sure all the locks used the same key, which makes things much easier for us. Everything was clean when he finished, and we’re very happy with the service. Thank you, American Star Locksmith!

We had stopped using our backyard because the lock on our Andersen sliding door was stuck. American Star Locksmith came to our home in Old Tappan, carefully opened the door, and replaced the lock and latch. The door works properly now, and we can use the backyard entrance again instead of walking around the house. We’re very grateful for the help and would recommend their service.

I lost my car key at Garden State Plaza in Paramus, so I went home to River Edge to look for my spare. When I couldn’t find it, I called American Star Locksmith. The technician was already near my home, and kindly drove me back to the mall. He made me a new key in about 20–25 minutes and charged a very fair price. Everyone was courteous and helpful. I highly recommend American Star Locksmith!

I recently moved into my home in Tenafly and called American Star Locksmith to replace the locks. They arrived within about 25 minutes and changed the locks on all three doors. They also keyed them alike, so I can use the same key for every door, which is very convenient. I’m very happy with the service, the quick response, and especially the fair price. I would definitely recommend them!
